Greetings!

Welcome to KeithYorkCity. My goal is to help you understand New York in new ways through writing and photography.

Welcome to KeithYorkCity

Welcome to KeithYorkCity

Hello and welcome. My name is Keith and this is KeithYorkCity, a site dedicated to all things New York. If you’re new here, or if you’re an old friend just curious about me and this project, then I’m writing this for you.

KeithYorkCity as a concept began in 2011 or 2012. I started a blog, writing long-form posts on New York City history: Evelyn McHale’s jump from the Empire State Building, the Collyer Brothers’ Harlem mansion, and really whatever else caught my interest. Like many projects, I let the blog fizzle out. It was a bit directionless, and I was constantly searching for new ways to tell stories, never feeling like I succeeded.

In 2016, I revived the name as an Instagram account, @KeithYorkCity where the more structured format and character limitations gave me the freedom to stop fussing and overthinking, but to just post short-form muses and discoveries that I could easily share with followers. The response it has gotten has been beyond anything I’d hoped for, and I’ve met so many wonderful people through the platform. With few reservations, I say that Instagram has been a positive experience for me.

That said, I am feeling the walls of the place. There are times when the stories I want to tell simply don’t fit into a post. And I know it can be exhausting to click through a story of 75+ photos with writing in order to join me on my mental journey. So here I am, in 2020, tentatively stepping into the realm of the website. I don’t want to hang too many hopes on this new page, as I’d like to be open to wherever it leads. But one thing I do hope is that it’ll be a place where I can feel free to write more openly and spontaneously, and where my photos can live at a more digestible scale.

My goal is to eventually launch walking tours, which will likely be accessible through this site, but those and whatever else materializes down the road remain works in progress. For now, thank you for visiting, and thank you for walking with me.
